Did you know that the tomato, one of the most popular vegetables in the world, is really not a vegetable at all? Botanically, it is considered a fruit due to its flowering nature. However, in 1893 the U.S. Supreme Court declared the tomato a vegetable based on the general definition that classifies vegetables by use. Since tomatoes are served with dinner rather than dessert, the court categorized them as a vegetable. Of course, this definition was passed as it relates to commerce rather than science (the tomato is still viewed as a fruit in the botanical sense), but if you're like most people, you've come to know the tomato simply as one of the most favorite vegetables in your garden.

Despite such lofty attentions and popularity, the tomato is actually a very humble vegetable, er fruit (we'll just call it a vegetable from here, okay?). Relatively easy to grow, with a little care and effort they reward you with a delicious, nutritious bounty that should last you through the cold(er) months until it's time to raise a new crop.

So how do you start? Well, the basics are pretty simple; you need plants or seeds, soil, sun (tomatoes love the sun!) and water. Throw in some 'tomato food' for extra measure, and you've got the beginnings of a great tomato garden!
